The work of the HWHRDM can be linked to the broader goals of the international women’s rights movement seeking to end all forms of violence against women.

Reducing all violence in the Highlands provinces of PNG is a priority, particularly violence against women.  All forms of violence against women is unacceptable, regardless of community or culture.  The purpose of the HWHRDM is to work cohesively throughout the seven Highlands provinces to reject and prevent violence through peace building among common tribal enemies.

Tribal conflict in the Highlands provinces often leads to tribal warfare, which results in the loss of countless lives and the destruction of homes and livelihoods.  It is women and children who are most vulnerable during this warfare and it is their human rights that are most frequently violated. We believe all people have the right to live in dignity, safety, mutual respect and harmony within their own communities.

As committed Women Human Rights Defenders working within our own communities, through the HWHRDM we aim to strengthen our networks at the local, regional and national level in PNG, as well as at the international level.

United, we aim to make the voice of women and communities in the Highlands provinces stronger and louder, to make people- including the PNG government and the international community- to make them  listen and to end tribal warfare and violence in the Highlands of PNG.
