Human Rights Defenders Movement
political empowerment
We work building networks and increasing collaboration with regional and national government to enhance the voice of the movement in the Highlands. We aim to give political empowerment, advocacy and lobbying trainings to future women leaders and youth.
advocacy
We advocate and lobby at the local, regional, national and international level to a range of stakeholders to bring peace and end violence against women in the Highlands. We are currently advocating to government to increase the salaries and recognition for the valuable work for Village Court officials, lobby the government to establish a National Human Rights Commission and to review the Constitution for legislative reforms in the areas of sorcery, rape, domestic violence, tribal warfare, polygamy and marriage laws. We also lobby for increased government services and equal distribution of basic service for water, sanitation, electricity, access to health, roads and infrastructure in all Highlands provinces.
economic empowerment
We conduct research and document the negative economic impacts of tribal warfare, including the loss of property, livelihoods (food crops, gardens, livestock, etc.), and in future seek to create employment opportunities for youth, micro-finance trainings and focus more efforts towards food security and preservation initiatives, sustainable livelihood promotion including eco-tourism and eco-forestry, and work towards market creation and improvement.
human rights, law & justice
We provide direct support to victim/survivors and witnesses of human rights violations through counselling and referral services, rehabilitation, financial support for transport, temporary shelter provision and resettlement. We monitor and document human rights violations and promote awareness of these through the media and international instruments. We hold gender and human rights trainings and workshops, and raise awareness amongst communities, and work with the law and justice sectors to improve access to justice for victims.
peace building
Focusing on conflict prevention and inclusive strategies, we work with the government and communities to bring about Signing of Peace Treaties between warring tribal factions and encourage the enforcement of community by-laws to bring about peace. We raise awareness of the devastating impacts of warfare on communities, particularly on women, children and on the displaced.
